Wickham Park Invitational (CT) Recap and Results, 10/11/14

GIRLS

On a wet and soggy, turned beautiful day late, girls teams from New Hampshire swept all 3 varsity races!  Merrimack began things with a close to 100 point win in the Unseeded Race despite missing some runners due to SATs. Their freshmen duo of Bailey Carillo (3rd) and Grace Corbett (10th) led the way.

Londonderry girls bounced back and employed a 28 second pack time for a 17 point win over Avon.  Seniors Courtney Gray and Alexandra Sealey led the way for the Lancers.

Coe-Brown took on Connecticut’s #1 Tolland (US #25, Northeast #3) on their home course.  The upstart Tolland team took the race to the Bears, and midway through the race, the outcome was still in the air.  Much like Derryfield, there is a major hill just prior to the 2 mile mark and that is when the Lady Bears seemed to pull away for the win, despite losing their fifth runner, placing 4 in the top 10 to squeak out the 22 point win.  Bishop Guertin was 4th and Pinkerton placed 6th overall.

Individually, in the race of the day, Coe-Brown’s Hannah Parker overcame a strong move by Pinkerton’s Morgan Sansing at the 2 mile mark to take the win in the final straightaway.  Parker and Sansing were the only two to crack the 19:00 barrier on the muddy course, and along with Coe-Brown’s Brooke Laskowsky and Liz Danis led NH to taking four of the top five places in the race.

Coe-Brown girls JV team won the JV 2 race led by Ahna McCusker’s individual win.

BOYS

Nashua North and Nashua South took 2 of the top 3 places in the Seeded Race.  North edged South by 10 points, and was only 16 points out of 1st.  Both teams used packing and went back and forth the entire race.

In the boys’ Championship Race, NH’s #2 Timberlane and #3 Coe-Brown teams battled.  While the Bears got out well and were probably beating the Owls through half the race,  Timberlane ran a strong second half to pull away and place 5th overall, 22 points up on CBNA.  Leading the way for the Owls, and passing at least 5 athletes in the last 800, was Liam Kimball to place 4th overall.  Davio DeLuca led the Bears with a 15th place finish.

Coe-Brown boys JV team won the JV 2 race led by River Groves’s individual win.

Wickham Park is the site of this year’s New England Championships.
