Athlete Feature: Belmont’s Alice Riley

When did you start competing in track and field?

I started competing two years ago in outdoor track in seventh grade, and I started indoor track this year.

What is your favorite track and field event?

My favorite indoor track event is the 3000, and last year (in middle school) my favorite event was the 1600. I can’t wait to compete in the 3200 this year though.

If you could do any event in track and field, which would it be and why?

I have a lot of respect for 400 and 800 runners. Those are hard races. In addition to the long distance races, I would love to be competitive in the middle distance races.

riley2-2How does your coach motivate you?

My coaches motivate me by letting me push the boundaries and work hard, but also telling me when enough training is enough. They let me dream big, while staying injury free.

What is your go-to pre race meal?

I love spaghetti before races, although I have also eaten a 8” personal pizza before D3s.

Do you have a favorite pre race song?

I really like “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. Overall though, any disco will do.

What motivates you to do well?

The hard work I’ve put in over the season really motivates me to do well. Also, I’m competitive.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Still work just as hard, because I find it fun.

What is the best advice ever given to you?

Work hard, trust your training, but most of all, have fun.

           What is your favorite quote?

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” ~Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 1986riley-2

If you go to college, do you plan to compete in track and field? And where?

I plan on going to college and hope to compete in cross country and track when I get there!

What is your favorite thing about Track and Field?

Probably the people. My teammates are awesome and super supportive, even if they are crazy the other half of the time. The sport wouldn’t be the same without them. Also, I love to compete and I’ll never say “no” to a hill workout.

What is your favorite track facility?

I might be biased with this question, but I really like the Belmont High School facility for outdoor. I think that we have really good equipment and the meets are always run super smoothly. For indoor, I really like University of Southern Maine’s track.

  1. Alice is developing into a strong competitor and smart racer. I suspect she will be challenging for distance supremacy in D3 for the coming years. Looking forward to watching her develop over the next three years.
