Coach Korkoulis Invitational @ Hollis-Brookline
With the temperature dropping overnight, the weather was ripe for racing at the Lou Kourcoulis Memorial Invitational at Hollis-Brookline High School. With thirteen teams in attendance, there was bound to be some racing on the challenging HB course.
In the men’s race, a large pack set out at the front, with a dozen guys in contention coming off the track and headed out the access road. But 800 meters later, it appeared it would be a duel between Mascenic’s Jake Movsessian and Pelham’s Cameron Starr. These two waged war this past Tuesday at the Jamie Martin Invitational at Sanborn with Starr finishing 5 seconds up on a ‘single-shoed’ Movsessian. Would things be different if Movsessian keeps both his shoes on?
On the return trip we would get to find out the answer. Starr exited the woods trail with half a mile to go with Movsessian right on his tail. Shoes or no shoes Movsessian wouldn’t be able to close any further on Starr who would eventually extend his lead to five seconds, finishing in 17 minutes, 13 seconds. The duo had a gap back to third, taken by Jeffrey Allen of Campbell. Henry Keegan of Oyster River and Simon Doneski of Hopkinton rounded out the top five.
Oyster River won this one handily with three in the top ten and the scoring five in the top twenty accumulating 52 points, . Mascenic found themselves in the runner up spot for the second time in a week, with 84 points. Pelham finished third.
Next up were the girls and Milford’s Alex Matsis wasted no time assuming the leading duties, opening a significant gap on her pursuers in the race’s first half mile. She was chased by Sammy Molinari and Caitlin Callinan of Campbell, Alice Riley of Belmont, Samantha Bilodeau of Mascenic, Clare Ververka of ConVal, Maddie Baughn of Saint Thomas and Danielle Slavin of Oyster River. The racing got hot out in the woods with Matsis’s lead shrinking as they exited the woods. Ververka was stalking the lead, but would eventually finish 15 seconds back of Matsis in 20 minutes, 21 seconds. Slavin of Oyster River would finish third, followed by Riley and OR’s Olivia Lenk.
The Con Val ladies would once again find themselves atop the heap for the second time in a week, scoring 63 points to Oyster River’s 68. Campbell finished third.
In the combined JV meet, OR’s #9 man Jake Welgarz lead start to finish, running 20 minutes, 24 seconds for first. Mascenic’s Robert “Mac Daddy” McLain finished second, 40 seconds back.
The women’s JV meet was won by Grace Castonguay of Oyster River in 24 minutes, 8 seconds, followed by HB’s Lily Jackson in second.
