Mascenic Homecoming – Friday, 9/16/16

2016-mascenic-homecoming-results

The Mascenic Cross Country teams got off to a strong start for the Mascenic homecoming celebration this past Friday afternoon.  The temperatures were deceivingly warm as a cold front had come in and brought the recent warm weather to a halt.  But the slightly warmer temps weren’t enough to quell some solid performances for the Mascenic harriers.

img_0683The girls got things going at 4pm with Mascenic’s Samantha Bilodeau taking the lead right from the gun.  With a bunch of her Mascenic teammates in her wake, Bilodeau exited the baseball field in the lead and on a mission.  Conant’s Isabella Mormando took a position just inside her slipstream with Mascenic’s Madison Labrie right behind. The trio would stay together before Bilodeau’s pace at the front got a little too hot for Labrie around the mile mark.  While Mormando would hold on for another mile, Bilodeau would eventually put the pedal down and open a 55 second back on Mormando by the finish.  Labrie would follow 14 seconds later and Mascenic freshman phenom Samantha Hughson would finish fourth.  Mascenic would put its top five runners in the top nine, easily securing the win with 23 points. Freshmen Shelby Babin and Sophie Callahan would finish 8th and 9th.

Cross town rivals Conant would have a strong showing as well.  img_0684Along with Mormando in second, Claire Van Houten (6th), Lilly Bennett (7th), and Julia Aho (10th) would all finish in the top ten.  Conant would score 38 points.  Derryfield (66) and Hillsboro-Deering  (102) would round out the scoring, with Hinsdale unable to field enough runners to score as a team.

After watching the girls run away with the race, the Mascenic boys were inspired to pick up where the girls left off.  While a Hillsboro-Deering athlete was determined to lead the race, by 1000 meters the real race was underway with Mascenic’s Jake Movsessian at the front being shadowed by Derryfield’s #1 man Ben Garfield in his hip pocket.  A string of Mascenic and Derryfield guys followed.  Mascenic won the D3 championships two years ago by a point over Derryfield and the Derryfield guys came out swinging, looking to measure up to the crew from Mascenic.

As the boys reached the halfway point and headed out for the second lap Garfield still sat on Movsessian’s shoulder.  They had gapped the field and a strong battle was shaping up between Mascenic’s and Derryfield’s #2 men, DJ Turner and Caleb Richmond respectively.  Three Mascenic runners were hunting those ahead of them in Logan Thibault, Dakota Somero and Michael Fappiano Puttre.  The battling was epic and we would soon see who had enough to make it to the end of the race with some breathing room.

Out on the second loop, Movsessian decided it was time to crank it up and Garfield was gamely trying to hang on.  But in a brief moment it was over. The connection between the two runners broken and Movsessian pulling away.  Garfield ended up unable to finish the race due to overheating.  Garfield would recover after medical treatment.  Movsessian would win in 16 minutes, 48 seconds.

The battle for second came down to the last half mile where Turner was able to regroup and put on a finishing march beating Richmond by eight seconds.  Turner’s teammates were also marching on the finish, with Thibault, Fappiano Puttre and Somero finishing in the next three spots.  Jake Zina would finish in eighth, putting six Mascenic runners in the top eight for the win.  Mascenic would win 18 to 54 to Derryfield.  Conant would finish in third with 73 and Hillsboro-Deering would be fourth with 106 points.  Caleb Olsen would finish in the top ten for Conant, finishing in ninth.

Both the Mascenic and Conant teams will compete this Friday at the Shattuck Golf Club for Conant’s homecoming.  The girls race begins at 4pm and the race starts and finishes on the driving range on the back nine.
