Div ii-iii State-30On an overcast, yet colorful, fall foliage-filled afternoon at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, junior varsity teams from Division 2 and 3 competed to settle who had the best JV team in the state.  The girls led things off, and in a slight surprise, the ladies of Portsmouth took home their first title in recent memory with a score of 44 points. Off the strength of a 35 second pack time, the Lady Clippers placed 5 in the top 13. They were led by overall runner-up Emily Locandro (22:11) and Abigail Martin, who placed 6th (22:26). Also scoring for the state champs were Kate Murphy (11th, 22:45), Sarah Morin (12th, 22L46) and Carly Walker (13th, 22:46).

Souhegan placed 2nd with a score of 60 points, while Coe-Brown, off the strength of Sydney Carney’s individual title, placed 3rd with 75 points, edging Oyster River’s 84 points.

Carney ran an extremely intelligent, patient race, hanging back the first mile in the top ten.  Over the middle mile of the rolling hill, challenging course, she moved her way up to 3rd, taking the lead and extending it over the last mile to win in 21:53.

On the boys side, the entire Coe-Brown team seemed to follow Carney’s lead Div ii-iii State-254
by demonstrating great patience over the first mile of the course.  Also off the strength of a 35 second pack time, the Bears placed 5 in the top 7 and 9 of the top 15 to win with 23 points.

CBNA was led by individual champ Tristan Jardon (18:03), who also masterfully worked the 2nd mile to open up a slight gap over OR’s Patrick Lyons. Runner-up Oyster River definitely made the Bears work for it by applying pressure in the early going and placing four in the top 10 for 39 points.  Also scoring for the CBNA were freshmen Cole Hodgdon (4th, 18:22) and Dawson Dubois (5th, 18:30) as well as Gavyn Auclair (6th, 18:36) and Jake Spainhower (7th, 18:38).  Oyster River’s Cameron Casella (3rd, 18:17), Jake Weglarz (8th, 18:43) and Aidan Yoder (9th, 18:46) filled the rest of the top 10.
