All that’s left in preparation is to get excited by looking at what to watch for!!!
Starting with the girls side, with three ranked in the top 4 in the 200 and top 3 of the 400, look for the Oyster River sprint crew to continue to dominate. Led by junior Xiana Twombly (seeded #2 in the 100 and #1 in the 200), the lady Bobcats could score 40+
points in the the three sprinting events alone. They may be pressed int eh 4×100 as Portsmouth is the top seed by only .07 over Oyster River.
Fresh off her blazing 10:05 performance, which would be top seed on the boys side Friday, Exeter’s Jackie Gaughan is listed as the top seed in the 1600 at 4:53.94. Could Maegan Doody’s 4:48.63 meet record be in jeopardy? Could Gaughan add the 1600 to her state record collection?
Following in Exeter tradition, junior Ellie Johnston is the #1 seed in both hurdle events. With the top 3 seeds, Sanborn looks to score big in the High Jump with freshman Hannah Ehlers leading the way at 5’2″. Underclassmen seem to be the theme in the jumps as Exeter freshman Sydney Ward is top seed in the Long Jump and Winnacunnet sophomore Molly Maynard is the top seed in the Triple Jump.
Some of the best competition of the day should be seen in the throwing sectors as Dover’s Sarah Williams, Sanborn’s Megan Sheehan, and Coe-Brown’s Kathleen Collins are all slated to compete!
On the boys side, Winnacunnet looks super strong in the sprints, jumps and hurdles. Brandon Hanley is the top seed in both the 100 and 200. His teammate, Phillip Antonio, the meet record holder in the 100 and Long Jump, is 2nd seed in the 100 and top seed in the Long Jump. Fresh off his Loucks Games title, Billy Powers is second seed in the 400, and top seed in both hurdle events. And finally, their 4×100 relay team will enjoy the preferred lane as the favorite.
Oyster River’s Patrick O’Brien is slated to race the 1600. With his resume, the meet record is certainly in jeopardy. Coe-Brown’s middle distance crew led by Zach Richards, top seed in the 800, has the top seeds in both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.
In what should be some great competition in the throws, Coe-Brown’s Isaiah Allen is the top seed in the Shot and Discus. However, with the top three in the shot separated by only 10 inches and the top 3 in the Javelin, where Portsmouth’s Noah Shoer is the top seed, separated by only 15 inches, the sectors would be a great place for fans to camp out.
With the weather finally cooperating and the state championships next weekend, look for performances to certainly improve especially in the sprints, jumps and throws! Good luck to everyone!
