Athlete Feature: Coe-Brown’s Evan Tanguay

When did you start running?

I started running my 8th grade year at Deerfield Community School.

Briefly describe the experience as a member of your team/program.  Give an example of some of the “fun” stuff your team does together.

Coe-Brown CrossCountry has been an amazing experience for me as both an athlete and as a person. I came into the program as a freshmen knowing no one because I came from Deerfield and everyone accepted me right away. I didn’t feel like I was an outcast but more of part of a new community. Over the past four years, I’ve seen amazing athletes, leaders, and people come through this program and there is nothing quite like it. I’ve made new friends and strengthened bonds with old ones through Coe-Brown’s Cross-Country program while also continuing to get better as an athlete and a person year after year.

How does your coach motivate you?

Having two coaches allows me to have two different sources of motivation. Coach Cox tells me my pace and mile splits allowing me to know when to pick it up or stay calm which allows me to stay confident in a race. Coach Tkaczyk is the little man on my shoulder telling me to suck it up which tells me he believes that I can give more at that moment.

What motivates you most to do well?

Knowing that I have a group of guys who are battling just as hard as I am, pushes me to do my best as well as representing not only Coe-Brown but Deerfield because I am one of a few from Deerfield.

What is your favorite workout?

My favorite workout has changed over the four years I have been here. As a freshmen I used to always love a good long run, but I have slowly come to enjoy the tempo run. A good tempo leaves me refreshed and confident.

What is your favorite cross training activity?

My favorite cross-training activity is either core or body-weight exercises because I feel great after completing them as a workout.

What is your go-to prerace meal?

My go-to prerace meal has been grilled chicken w/ rice and pesto + a smoothie/protein shake

Do you have a favorite prerace song?

I have a prerace playlist that I listen to.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

Europe because of all the historic running places you can visit and run.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Start my own running store like Runner’s Alley or start my own clothing brand.

What is the best advice ever given to you?

“Today is tomorrow.”

What is your favorite quote?

“Don’t be bitter, be better.”

What is your favorite thing about Cross Country?

The team atmosphere across multiple teams. You aren’t just a part of your team, you are a part of New Hampshire’s team when competing at New England’s, Regional’s and National’s.

What is your favorite course to run? (High school courses)

My favorite course would have to be Brown University because I had my favorite race there last year. It is a flat course which is a type of course we don’t run much during the season.

What is your favorite race outside of the high school season?

My favorite race outside of the season would have to be the Deerfield Old Home Day 5k because it is local and there is no better feeling than supporting your hometown doing the thing you love.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years???

In 5 years I hope to be about to graduate college and hopefully have started my own clothing brand. I would love to still be running and hopefully be able to run for some running brand like New Balance.
