Athlete Feature: North’s David Vorbach

When did you start running?

I started running in 4th grade. I didn’t start taking competition seriously until freshman year of high school.

Briefly describe the experience as a member of your team/program.  Give an example of some of the “fun” stuff your team does together.

We’re all working to get better. A big part of the team culture is pushing for full effort in practice. During practice, we put the work in. Outside, we all get along and will do stuff together when we get a chance. Most of our fun comes from Thursday night pasta or days in the summer when we’re free.

How does your coach motivate you?

He tries to get me to see the long-term plan.

What motivates you most to do well?

Knowing that I could be better.

What is your favorite workout?

5-6x1000m on cross-country terrain. I’ve always found 1000m interval efforts to be a refreshing workout that gives me some confidence in my fitness.

What is your favorite cross training activity?

Biking, but my bike broke a while ago. So, hiking.

What is your go-to prerace meal?

I don’t have a specific meal I eat. Usually I try to keep it light- a sandwich of some sort is the most common thing.

Do you have a favorite prerace song?

There’s a few that get me pumped. “Reptilia” by the Strokes, “Ain’t Messin’ Around” by Gary Clark Jr., and an assortment of many others.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

Greece, probably. Greece is pretty neat.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

If I couldn’t fail, I probably wouldn’t have a lot of motivation to do anything. For the sake of the question, though, I’ll say write a book or album that’s successful. Something along those lines.

What is the best advice ever given to you?

“Follow your bliss.”

From Joseph Campbell

What is your favorite quote?

“It’s only when a man tames his own demons that he becomes the king of himself if not of the world.”

Also from Joseph Campbell.

What is your favorite thing about Cross Country?

The trips you make with your team to all of the different courses, and the post-race stuff after is what makes the season so memorable for me.

What is your favorite course to run? (High school courses)

Franklin Park down in Boston. We run there every year for the Catholic Memorial Invite. The course is a nice, varied, course and the team traditions after in Boston are always fun.
