The state championship portion of the 2018 cross country season got off to a rousing start as the Division 2/3 JV State Championships were held at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy yesterday. Congratulations to Oyster River Cross Country as they pulled off the sweep! Both were tight team races not decided until the last moments with the girls edging Coe-Brown 27 to 42 and the boys being even closer as the Bobcats nipped the Bears by only 2 points.
The Lady Bobcats benefited from Leah Parks and Addie Berglund going 1-2 in 21:34 and 21:36 respectively. Hanover’s Bridget Meehan placed 3rd in 21:37 while Coe-Brown’s Elizabeth White was 4th in 21:42. Oyster River countered with the next two places as Grace Henry and Emma Hall both posted 22:06.They were followed by CBNA’s Kiersten Ranfos (22:08), Portsmouth’s Kali Stover (8th, 22:12), CBNA’s Oliva Noni (9th, 22:15) and Kylee Blad (10th, 22:28).
Rounding out the top 10 were Souhegan’s Sophia Lunati (11th, 22:39), CBNA’s Savannah Marsh (12th, 22:47), OR’s Maggie Keenan (13th, 22:53), CBNA’s Kelsey Pine (14th, 23:04) and Hanover’s Riley Roach (15th, 23:04). Rounding out the top 5 teams were Portsmouth (3rd, 88), Hanover (4th, 23:16), and Souhegan (5th, 150).
Coe-Brown got off to a great start in the boys’ race as Porter Heigis pulled away over the last half mile to win in 17:47 , but Oyster River with Patrick Lyons and Amanuel Harvey countered with the next 2 places in 17:56 and 18:13 respectively. The pendulum then swung back to the Bears’ favor as they took 4th and 5th with Tyler Rose (18:19) and Lars Hogne (18:22). OR’s Dillon LaBonte placed 6th in 18:31 while CBNA’s Isaac Wells nipped OR’s Criag Nadig at the line 18:38 to 18:39 for 7th. The pendulum ultimately swung in the Bobcats’ favor as their 5th, Trevor Sassaman placed 9th in 18:42. Souhegan was 3rd with 105 points edging Portsmouth (113) and Hanover (122).
Souhegan’s Nolan Dickinson broke up the dual meet placing 10th in 18:46. Rounding out the top 15 were OR’s Noah Strout (11th, 18:54), Mascenic’s Gabe Turner (12th 18:57), CBNA’s Aidan Ahern (13th, 18:58), Souhegan’s Peter Headington (14th, 19:03), and CBNA’s Cody Tanguay(15th, 19:04).
