Athlete Feature: Concord’s Morgane Orcutt

Cofrin Classic-063.jpgWhen did you start running?

I started running with my Dad for fun when I was young. Around third grade, we started racing in weekend 5Ks.

Briefly describe the experience as a member of your team/program.  Give an example of some of the “fun” stuff your team does together.

The Concord High School Girls Cross Country is a family. Our team has an incredible bond that I haven’t ever seen before. Each of us loves cross country so much that it makes coming to practice and meets a joy. There are many fun aspects to our team. Some of my favorites are our fun runs. These runs include a color run, a water balloon run, a Halloween-costume run, and passing out roses downtown for the love run.

What are your team goals for this season?

Our primary team goal is to be stronger and better than we were last year. I think we have a lot of really talented runners and we are hoping to have a top 3 finish at states as well as qualify for New Englands.

What has been your greatest challenge?

Time management. Balancing my training with a tough set of classes can be challenging at times.

How does your coach motivate you?

Coach Davis is the best. She is personally invested in each runner and knows how to help each of us reach our goals. She knows that I take a long-term approach to running, so she reminds me of what I need to do now to be strong when it counts.

What motivates you most to do well?Cofrin Classic-381.jpg

I mostly just love running. I also love the team aspect of cross country and working with my team to succeed as a group. Finally, I hope to run in college some day.

What is your favorite workout?

My favorites workouts are any track workouts. As we come around the finish line, there is always loud music playing and all the girls cheering for each other.

What is your favorite cross training activity?

My favorite cross training activity would be hiking. I love to hike in the summer and I am trying to hike all 48 4,000 footers with my Dad by the time I leave for college!

What is your go-to prerace meal?

My go to pre race meal would be two chocolate rice cakes with peanut butter in the middle.

Meet of Champions 2018-66.jpgDo you have a favorite prerace song?

I love jamming out to Ariana Grande with my team on the bus before meets to de-stress.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

If I could travel anywhere I would go to Australia.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

I would end climate change.

What is the best advice ever given to you?

Never give up and keep working hard.

What is your favorite quote?

“We beat with one heart.” This is our team quote. As we run each race, we are supposed to think about how we are running individually, yet working together as one.

What is your favorite thing about Cross Country?Black Bear Varsity 2018-43.jpg

My favorite thing about cross country is the team aspect. It feels like we have a second family and if we need anything, we can always count on one another.

What is your favorite course to run? (High school courses)

My favorite course is Derryfield Park because it is tough and because we have so many important meets there.

What is your favorite race outside of the high school season?

The Midnight Owl in North Conway. It is a 15K prediction run. You start whenever you want, and your goal is to finish at exactly midnight. The five closest runners to midnight win.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years???

Hopefully in 5 years,  I will be a college senior and still running competitively.
