Jeff Johnson Anecdote: Janet Bristol (Green Mt. AC) leads Trina Hosmer (Falcon TC) (leading in this photo, Janet is not leading the race) . In the background, Pam Bagian in the vertical striped shirt, running for a club in Michigan followed by Caroline a teenage marathon wonder from Eugene, OR. The trailing runner with her head cut off in this picture is Cheryl Bridges, eventually to be Shalane Flanagan’s mother. Janet’s shirt and shoes supplied by Jeff Johnson. Janet, then a 15-yr old sophomore at So. Burlington, VT, HS, was in the senior women’s race instead of the girls’ race because I was too inexperienced then to know any better, and her parents let me push her up to the seniors race. Janet bailed me out, though, by placing 5th, qualifying for the World XC Champs in San Sebastian, Spain, in March, 1972, where she finished 5th in the WORLD among Senior Women.
Editor’s Note: Due to the graciousness of Jeff Johnson, John Goegel and others, we are carrying over a series begun during the track season on our sister site, newhampshiretrackandfield.com . For those of you that don’t know, Jeff Johnson was employee #1 of Nike. He actually is the one responsible for naming the company. Fortunately for us, he was also a world class photographer of our great sports in the 1960s and 1970s during which he captured thousands of sports photographs. We are honored and thankful for their choice to use our sites as their medium for sharing their passion. We hope our presentations can do them justice!
