Race Videos and Interviews below!
The Championship season kicked off in fine fashion as the D2/D3 JV State Championships took place at Coe-Brown. Plain and simple. Junior Varsity athletes only. No varsity athletes as coaches had to declare their top 7 as of this week. 1 Girls Race. 1 Boys Race. Best individuals were determined. Best teams settled. The girls kicked things off and as forecasted Souhegan placed all 5 of their scorers in the top 14 to win comfortably with 36 points. Emma Herrero led the Sabers placing 2nd in 22:45 along with Erin Taylor and Riley Devine who placed 4th and 5th in 23:19 and 23:22. Adrienne Ayala (11th) and Kayli Pike (14th) rounded out Souhegan’s championship scoring.
The team surprise came as places 2nd through 4th were separated by a mere 13 points with 2nd and 3rd decided on a tiebreaker between 2 teams not predicted to contend. Kennett placed their 5 scorers in the top 28 and although Coe-Brown placed 4 in front of the Eagles 3rd, Kennett claimed the runner-up plaque because their 6th runner, Autumn Verran finished 2 in front of CBNA’s 6th. Kylie Walker (6th) and Stephnie Kendzierski (9th) led Kennett. Francesca Ferguson (12th) and Carly Hardy (13th) led the Bears. Led by 7th place finisher Charlotta Berglund, Oyster River placed 4th just 2 points behind their Rt. 4 rival and D3 powerhouse Hopkinton placed 5th led by 3rd place finisher Audrey Davies and 8th place Elizabeth Trafton. Individually, it was Lebanon junior Elizabeth Kourbatski leading from the gun to the tape winning with an impressive JV time of 22:24. Her teammate, Alena Demidova rounded out the top 10 in 24:06.
The boys race was certainly the Windham show as the Jaguars placed 4 in the top 5 and 5 in the top 9 to win easily with 23 points. Charles Sette led the charge placing 2nd in 18:38. He was more than supported by Jack Conrad (19:03, 3rd), Samuel Skilling (19:09, 4th), John Atilano (19:12, 5th), and Nicholas Hawkins (9th, 19:22). Most years, placing 5 in the top 15 with the individual champion would be good enough to win, but with 43 points, Coe-Brown placed a comfortable 2nd. They were led by individual champion Nikhil Chavda who ran a brilliant race, applying pressure from the first half mile throughout the rolling hills of the CBNA course to win in 18:31. Matthew Corriveau (7th), Luc Kerouac (8th), Jacob Cowan (12th), and Owen McLean (15th) also scored for the host Bears. Souhegan and Oyster River both amassed 76 points through 5 scorers. Led by Patrick Vore (11th) and Ben Gaudet (13th), Souhegan placed 3rd on the tiebreaker as Kasen Fox outleaned Oyster River’s 6th to claim the tiebreak. Oyster River was led by Theo Fleischer’s 6th place and Cole Harwood’s 10th place finishes.
Congratulations to all!!!
