Some of the best weather of the early season produced some excellent performances at the Black Bear Invitational at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy on Saturday. The girl’s meet was won by Exeter High School behind the strong 38 point effort of Sydney Lavelle, who was also named Female performer of the meet. Host Coe-Brown finished second 8 points back and Phillips Exeter Academy rounded out the top three. The boys meet was won in dominant fashion by Phillips Exeter Academy with a commanding 118 points. Second was host Coe-Brown with 74 and third was Oyster River with 56. The boy’s performer of the meet was Seth Baylus of Merrimack Valley with his double will in the 100 and 200 meter runs.
Boys Summary
As previously mentioned, boy’s performer of the meet, Baylus left no doubt on who the fastest sprinter in the state is with dominant wins in the 100m (10.85) and 200m (22.46) both very solid times into a 2mph head wind. Nyeoti Punni of Lebanon was the runner up in both. Ty Dorrow of Oyster River had an 18 point day for the Bobcats while collecting the win in the 400m run with a time of 51.12. Calvin Duffy of Winnacunnet took home the high hurdles in 16.25 and Aidan Silvestri of PEA went sub 40 for the win in the 300 hurdles.
A pair of juniors from PEA went sub 2 in the 800 meter, Owen Dudley (1:59.39) and Oliver Brandes (1:59.48) finishing 1-2. Sam Hilts of Concord (4:18.50) held off a charging Tyler Sheedy of Dover (4:22.12) in the boys 1600m. Sheedy had a fantastic double on the
day also running the 3200m (9:25.02). Speaking of the 3200, sophomore star Byron Grevious of PEA won the battle over All-American Aidan Cox of Coe-Brown. The conditions were quite windy during the race making a sub 9 attempt unlikely. They traded laps before finishing 1-2 in (9:15.47) and (9:23.31).
Coe-Brown took down the 4×100 and 4×800 relays while PEA scooped up the win in the 4×400.
Pre-meet favorite Daniel Doherty of Oyster River cleared 6 feet in the high jump for the win. Anders Larson of Coe-Brown took down a loaded Pole Vault field with a clearance of 12 feet. Jackson Giampi of PEA out jumped the field in the long jump and teammate Tyler Pezza out distanced the field in the triple jump.
Caden Zalenski of Milford won the shot put on his final attempt with a toss of 50’8” in one of the more exciting field events of the day. Caleb Phillips of PEA was able to get the best of Zalenski in the disc with a winning toss of 149’0”. Max Bishop of Hopkinton took home the win in the javelin with a toss of 142’10”. The top 5 finishers were separated by less than 5 feet.
Girls Summary
Girls performer of the meet Lavelle dominated the 300m Hurdles winning by more than 3 seconds in 45.53. She also won the long jump with a leap of 17’7” and the 100 meter hurdles 16.00.
Soraya Ross of Nashua South continued her dominant performances in the 100 meter run with a winning time of 12.76, she also finished second in the 200 meter and ran the anchor leg of Souths 4×100 winning relay team.
Alexis Best of Merrimack had an excellent day winning the 200m (26.84), and finishing 3rd in the 100m and 3rd in the 300 hurdles.
Kylee Quinlan of Winnacunnet made her season debut with a win in the 400 meter run in 1:01.31 of Ashlyn Smith of Dover 1:01.80.
My race of the day prediction didn’t disappoint as Brianna Malone of Portsmouth Christian used her lethal kick to get the win in
the 800 meters 2:16.62 over Fiona Doherty of Bishop Guertin 2:19.28.
Tenley Nelson of PEA took the 1600 in 5:17.74 and Chloe Trudel of Souhegan took the 3200m in 11:16.54.
Bishop Guertin flexed some more middle distance power and got a narrow win in the 4×400 meter run after also winning the 4×800.
Molly O’Donnell of Alvirne won the high jump 4’10” and was also third in the long jump.
Makenna Lee of Coe-Brown defended her home turf with the win in the pole vault clearing 9’0”.
Grace Hall of Hopkinton won the triple jump with a leap of 34’6”
Natalie Burgess of Nashua North (35’11.5”) bested teammate Madelyn Novak (34’9”)in the shot. Novak also finished 3rd in the discus and won the Javelin with a toss of 112’7”. Avery Hastings of PEA won the disc with a toss of 128’2.5”.
This meet typically marks the beginning of the invite season and the good weather. Fingers crossed and best of luck over the next few weeks.
