OUTDOOR NEW ENGLANDS ARE BACK!!!!
Connecticut has literally been waiting 3 years to host the 75th edition, which is one of its kind. A true regional championship in what we would like to think is the most competitive region in the nation. Let’s get right into what to watch for!
Sprints and Hurdles
NH State Champ Nashua South’s Soraya Ross sits at 12.46 and ranked #14, but don’t be surprised if she moves up a bunch. The podium seemingly sits at 12.31, this would be the goal. Ross finds herself ranked 14th in the 200 in 25.50, but don’t be surprised if the sophomore podiums in this one either. Also watch for Merrimack’s Alexis Best and Kennett’s Aida Wheat. All three of these NH stars are sophomores. Could this be only the beginning???
With NH State Champion Seth Baylus opting out of New Englands for graduation and resting up for Nationals, Leb’s Nyeoti Punni is NH’s top seed at 24th, but he could have a shot at cracking 11 seconds. Punni is ranked higher in the 200m at 14th.
In the girls high hurdles Plymouth senior Katherine Luehrs will be looking to continue her super spring as she is ranked 10th with Pinkerton junior Jordan Wheaton right behind her in 11th. Exeter’s NH State Champ Sydney Lavelle is ranked 7th and has yet to be
pushed once this season. Podium will be the goal, how high will be the question!
NH State Champion, Memorial’s Bryce Foster is ranked 13th with Salem’s David Jacques 18th and Bedford’s Christopher Chong 20th. The 300 Hurdles looks to be a great chance for NH to have a New England Champions as Portsmouth’s Nate Fletcher is ranked third, but don’t overlook South’s Rory Olsen who is ranked 5th.
NH top seed in the 400 meters is Monadnock’s Liliana Chirichella at 18th. She is followed by freshmen Jhanelle Thomas (North) and Piper Lopashanski (Kennett). On the boys’s side, NH State Champ Londonderry’s Sean Clegg seems to be just scratching the surface and is ranked 14th with Oyster River’s Ty Dorow right behind at 15th.
Mid D/Distance
NH State Champ PCA’s Brianna Malone is ranked 10th in the 800. Look for her to improved greatly as we have yet to see her race in a crowd. If she can lock on, this could be a big PR. D1 Champ Bedford’s Fiona Lee is ranked 15th. In the 1600 meters, with MV’s Sophia Reynolds opting to sit out for graduation, NH’s top seed will be freshman Haley Kavanagh from Oyster River at 25th. In the 3200 meters, NH State Champion Souhegan’s Chloe Trudel sees herself ranked 12th with D2 Champ Bow’s Susanna Zahn ranked 16th.
On the fella’s side, NH double State Champ, Hanover super stud Pierce Seigne is ranked 5th in the 800 and 12th in the 1600. As he indicated in his MOC interview, he will be competing in both this weekend! Awesome! We are certainly looking forward to how he fares when he has company the entire final lap.
Let’s remember NH State 3200m Champion Concord’s Sam Hilts posted his 7th ranked 9:15 doubling back from his 1600. Hilts has decided to run the 3200m fresh this weekend, so this could get rather interesting as the top seed is 9:06, less than 10 seconds. Also watch for Keene’s Jonathan Hills ranked at 11th. And do not count out Dover’s Tyler Sheedy or Gilford’s Patrick Gandini.
Jumps
Alvirne’s Molly O’Donnell is tied for 11th in the High Jump as NH’s top seed while Coe-Brown’s Makena Lee is ranked 4th in the Pole Vault at 11’0″. With the top seed at 11’6″, Lee is certainly in contention for not only a podium but for the win as well. Exeter’s Lavelle is ranked 22nd in the Long Jump as Hopkinton’s Grace Hall and Concord’s Ayva Mullen are ranked 13th and 14th respectively.
Londonderry’s Andrew Kullman, NH State Champ, is ranked tied for 4th at 6’4″ in the High Jump. Merrimack’s Samuel Epstein is ranked tied for 8th, but his PR of 14′ would have him ranked 5th. Nashua North’s Jack Sullivan is NH’s top seed at 24th in the Long Jump as well as 21st in the Triple Jump.
Throws
Newfound’s Paulina Huckins and Pinkerton’s Briana Danis are ranked 12th and 13th respectively in the shot put while Danis is ranked 7th in the Discus. North’s Madelyn Novak is ranked 12th in the Javelin.
And on the boys’ side Milford’s Caden Zalenski is ranked 20th while Goffstown’s Peyton Strickland is ranked 8th in the discus. Strickland’s PR however would put him closer to 3rd. Souhegan’s Wil Jaques is ranked 14th.
