For the first installment of HOKA Athlete of the Week for the 2023 Outdoor Season look no further than the Sanborn Invitational. A D2/D3 affair, this
invitational produced some pretty impressive performances on a not so perfect weather day. Yes 2 athletes stood out to be acknowledged this week, but check out below descriptions for others who deserve shout-outs this week. As always, if you feel someone else deserves one, comment below!
Oyster River’s Erin Carty dominated the hurdles sweeping both events. She began her day cruising to the win in the Highs in 16.42. We think she may have been holding back to unleash on the 300m Hurdles later in the day as the weather declined slightly. In the Intermediate Hurdles, Carty blasted under the meet record to win in 47 and change. While winning comfortably, she now has the top times in D2 in both events.
On the boys side, we went with an odd double winner. What if we told you there was an athlete who would win both the Javelin AND the 200? And in the 200, he would beat 2 of the best sprinters in the state. And he is from a small school in the Lakes Region? No its not Patrick Gandini. It is exactly what Gilford’s Isaiah Reese did on Saturday. He won the javelin by 21 feet with a huck of 164+ feet. He then proceeded to win an exciting 200 in the cold posting a time of 22.93. Congratulations to Reese and Carty! This week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week!
Shout-Outs
- Another unique double win at Sanborn was accomplished by Conant’s Ben Sawyer winning the Long Jump and the 300 Hurdles.
- Kennett’s Aida Wheat continues her D2 dominance in the sprints winning both the 100 and 200 easily.
- Gilford’s Patrick Gandini won both the 1600 and 800 in convincing fashion.
- CBNA’s Gavin Demas ran 4:30 to place second, but this kid is a 50 point 400 meter runner…can you say range?
- Oyster River’s Mackenzie Cook has decided to compete in outdoor track for the first time. Good decision as she won the 1600. Along with her teammate Haley Kavanagh, watch out for Bobcats in the distance events.
- Newmarket’s Alanna Hagen has quietly become one of the best middle distance kids in the state winning the 800 Saturday.
- Coe-Brown’s Zach Bistany has arrived with a 152 foot discus toss to win at Sanborn. This is currently the top mark in the state.
- Central’s Harriet Barber had herself a day at the Nashua North Invite winning both the 200 and 400 (57.92). She now has the state’s top times in both
events. - 4x100s dropped some fast times at the Nashua North Invite! Nashua South Girls and the Pinkerton Boys, 48.97 and 43.58.
- Pinkerton’s Jordan Wheaton continues to dominate Division 1 in the High Hurdles in 14.87, tops in the state.
- Merrimack’s Kailey Dillon ran a state’s best 300 Hurdles in 46.54.
- Hanover’s Lucien Gleiser posted a state leading time in the 800 with a 1:57.05.
- South’s Antonio Martinez threw the shot 52’1.25″.
- In Connecticut on Friday, CBNA’s Aidan Cox opened his season winning the mile in 4:16. This was a solo effort as he led from the 200 meter mark. Jamie Lano ran 4:26.
- The Granite State had great representation in the 5000 meters. BG’s Matt Giardina placed 5th in 15:09. CBNA’s Tyler Tkaczyk posted a 15:31 while Souhegan’s Owen Stine broke through and ran 15:40! BG’s Carson Fischer also broke 16, running 15:50.
