What a New England Championships yesterday for the Granite State! Congrats to all who qualified and participated yesterday at the 76th edition of the only
regional championship in the USA! Special, extra congrats to those athletes and relays who became New England Champions! Congrats to the Coe-Brown 4×800, Pinkerton’s Jordan Wheaton, Nashua South’s 4×100, Gilford’s Patrick Gandini and Isaiah Reese,
The boys from Coe-Brown actually began ran the figurative NH lead off leg of the day winning the 4×800. It’s a first for Coe-Brown as the school has never won a New England title in a relay of any kind. The squad of Jamie Lano, Aidan Cox, Tyler Tkaczyk, and Gavin Demas battled Hall (CT) and Xavier (CT) the entire race. It was Tkaczyk on the 3rd leg who applied the most pressure handing off to Demas on the anchor with the lead. Hall battled back to take the lead heading into the final lap, but Demas would pass with 250m to go to run a 1:53.74 split and cross in 7:48.08. The boys from Bedford also made podium placing 6th in 8:05. Their teammates placed 7th and were NH Top Finishers in the girls race with a 9:43.72.
Another team who was looking to win a New England title all season long was Nashua South’s 4×100 meter relay team of Mimi Ortiz, Iyana Braswell, Mia Cruz, and Soraya Ross. The NH State record holders crossed the line in 48.43 for the comfortable win. Pinkerton who has kept South honest the entire season 
gained All-New England honors placing 4th in 48.69. The Pinkerton boys also placed 4th to garner All-New England honors crossing in a season’s best 42.93.
Running 2nd leg on that relay was the New England Champion in the High Hurdles, Jordan Wheaton. Dominant in NH the entire season, Wheaton ran another phenomenal set of hurdles crossing in 14.60 to win comfortably!
Gilford High School can boast 2 New England Champions! When was the last time a D3 school has done that? Isaiah Reese was the surprise winner in the javelin as he unleashed a bomb of a winning throw spanning 184’3″. Patrick Gandini concluded his scholastic career by running a classic, intelligent race we have come to expect from him. He measured the field, took the lead in the middle and when he was passed he relaxed, gathered himself for a final move crossing with the title in 4:09.01. “Nothing wrong with that”.
Kennett’s Aida Wheat had a nice day as NH’s top finisher in 2 events. She placed 7th in the 100 in 12.30, but made the podium placing 5th overall in the 200 in a blazing fast time of 24.91! Trinity’s Nehemiah Oyaronbi was NH’s top finisher in the 100, placing 8th in 11.24 while Keene’s Chris Stevens was NH’s top finisher on the 200 also placing 8th in 22.23.
Central’s Harriet Barber had a fantastic race in the 400 placing 2nd overall to gain New England honors posting another super fast 56.43 from the second heat!
PCA’s Brianna Malone challenged for the win in the 800 and placed a very close 3rd in 2:13.76. The winner won in 2:12. Newmarket’s Alanna Hagen and Bedford’s Fiona Lee were also in the battle the entire race placing 7th and 8th both in 2:15. Oyster River’s Chris Jernigan was NH’s top finisher in the 800 placing, agonizingly close to the podium, 7th in 1:54.80.
Jernigan’s teammate and NH State Champ, Haley Kavanagh was NH’s top finisher in the 1600 placing 8th in 5:07.76. Pinkerton’s Isabelle Groulx was tops in NH in the 3200 placing 10th in 11:23.70 outleaning OR’s Mackenzie Cook. The boys had a nice showing in the 3200 as 2 Granite Staters made podium Congrats to BG’s Matthew Giardina and Lebanon’s Birhanu Harriman as they placed 2nd and 4th respectively in 9:14.58 and 9:16.26.
Bedford’s Christopher Chong placed 4th in the High Hurdles crossing in 14.52. NH placed 2 in the 300 meter hurdles as North’s Jhanelle Thomas and Oyster River’s Erin Carty both made podium. Thomas was 4th in 44.66 and Carty was 6th in 45.21. South’s Rory Olsen also made All-New England placing 3rd in 39.14.
Concord was NH’s top team in the girls 4×400 placing 9th in 4:08.59 while Oyster River placed 14th on the boys side in 3:28.60.
Concord’s Ella Goulas placed 7th in the High Jump clearing 5’3″. She had a great day as she popped a Triple Jump of 36’1.25″ to be tops in NH in that event as well. Concord’s Alain Twite was All-New England placing 6th with a jump of 44’1.25″ and was NH’s top finisher! David Walker of Inter-Lakes was tops in NH placing 10th as a freshman in the Triple Jump. Winnisquam’s Aidan Donahue was tops in NH pin the High Jump placing 9th clearing 6’3″. Londonderry’s Marline Fittzgerald was tops in NH in the Pole Vault while Concord’s Colby Nyhan and Winnacunnet’s Wyatt Patterson tied for 3rd clearing 13’3″.
As with the pole vault, NH had 2 athletes podium in the girl’ long jump as Bedford’s Anika Scott and South’s Braswell placed 3rd and 4th in the Long Jump. Conant’s Ben Sawyer placed 7th on the boys’ side.
Pinkerton’s Briana Danis popped another discus bomb to place 2nd with a mark of 140’9″ to gain a much deserved All-New England honor. Coe-Brown’s Zach Bistany placed 7th on the boys’ side with a 156′ mark. North’s Madelyn Novak gained another runner-up honor for NH as she threw the javelin 123’9″. In addition to Reese winning the boys javelin, Newport’s Kyle Ashley also made podium placing a super impressive 5th with a toss of 175’3″.
Hats off to the Bangor, Maine community. Not only did they come together to build a state-of-the-art facility, one of the best in New England, but their authentic hospitality guided by prioritizing the student-athletes has few rivals! Thank you Bangor, Maine! Congrats to all!
