Growth: “Life depends upon growth, and growth depends upon change.” – Jeff Johnson
WHAT: New England Cross Country Championships
WHO: Terry Eustis (Exeter #73), Madeleine Nash (Exeter #72), Linda Tremblay (Pinkerton, #64), Judy McGrone (Dover, #81)
WHERE: Montpelier, VT
WHEN: 1977
Note: This was the first time that girls were invited to compete in the New Englands, though the boys had been participating for several years. Girls’ XC was new to most New England high schools. In NH, the first XC State Championship for girls was not until 1975. There were no Class (Divisions) meet preceding the state meet. Not enough teams to justify it. But in 1975, enough girls and teams showed up to put stress on the UNH course. In the following year, 1976, the NHIAA divided the state’s girls’ xc teams into Class L (large schools, over 1000 enrollment), and Class IMS combined (Intermediate:500-999, Medium: 250-499; Small: under 250 enrollment).
Editor’s Note: Due to the graciousness of Jeff Johnson, John Goegel and others, we are continuing our series begun several years ago. For those of you that don’t know, Jeff Johnson was employee #1 for Nike. He actually is the one responsible for naming what is now a world corporation. Fortunately for us, he was also a world class photographer of our great sports in the 1960s and 1970s during which he captured thousands of sports photographs. We are honored and thankful for their choice to use our sites as their medium for sharing their passion. We hope our presentations can do them justice!
