Volume 4
Taking our first look into a Division II program, NHXCTF met with the Spartans of Milford High School. They can boast both XC and track & field prowess and on the women’s side such names as Lauren Robinson and Rebecca Durham come to mind. The latter still holds the record at the Black Bear Invitational with an impressive time of 18:09! The men have been a “steady eddie” team, finishing in the top half of division 2 on a regular basis. This year they are led by a pair of juniors in Logan Korthals and Will Whitley. Look for them to continue to push towards the top of DII with a top 5 divisional finish a definite possibility. The Spartans are under relatively new coaching leadership, but Coach Julie Dutton comes from the XC equivalent of a Bill Belichick coaching tree. This Londonderry High School alum definitely knows her stuff, so let’s see which workout she uses to send Milford to the top of DII!
NHXCTF: Who are you?
“My name is Julie Dutton and I have been coaching at Milford for 3 years.“
NHXCTF: What program do you represent?
“Milford Boys and Girls”
NHXCTF: What workout would you like to feature from your program?
“Repeat 1000s at goal 5k pace with about 2-3 minutes rest”
NHXCTF: How long has this been a go to workout?
“This is a classic, yet tried and true workout that’s been around for years!”
NHXCTF: What part of the season do you usually implement this workout?
“We typically will do this workout in early September and then again in October.”
NHXCTF: Where did you get the workout and how did it come about?
“I first did this workout way back in the late 90s when I was running for Londonderry under coaches Ed Burgess and Amy Sanborn. At Milford, we run this workout around the perimeter of Keyes Park which is about a mile away from our high school. The loop is mostly flat, on grass and gravel terrain. We run these repeats at our *goal* 5k race pace so athletes work on running the pace they are looking to race at.”
