This coming Saturday one of the more unique track and field meets takes place at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The 37th New England Indoor Track and Field Championship invites the very best from all 6 New England states to compete in the largest, maybe only, regional championship in the United States. One of the reasons the northeast, particularly New England, is the mecca of indoor track and field, this meet is always competitive with many surprises! Top 6 in each event earn a medal and All-New England honors!
Sprints and Hurdles
Bedford’s Anika Scott certainly is the headliner here as the senior is the top seed in the High Hurdles. She was 2nd last year and is the top returner with a 7.84 seed time giving her a more than .2 cushion on the the field. Look for Hollis/Brookline’s Grace Dow to have an outside shot at the podium (top 6). Ranked 6th on the performance list, D2 State Champ Pelham’s Colby Crear has a legit shot at making All-New England (top 6) with a seed of 7.48. Brockton, MA’s Lucas Andrade is the top seed with a 7.29.

In the dash, the Raye sisters, Lisa and Xenia of West Warwick, RI certainly own this event as the top 2 seeds. Lisa checks in at a 6.87. Matter of fact she is the returning national champion in the 100 and 200 meters from last spring. NH’s top seed is Leanny Ortiz-Blanco, ranked 14th at a 7.29. This is the 55 however, and she realistically could crack the top 7! Top seed on the boys side is Luke Richardson from Bethel, CT with a 6.34. Top NH seed is Pinkerton’s Matthew Morrison at a 6.42, ranked 5th. Anything can happen in the Dash. Morrison is a legit contender. Also watch for Milford’s Avery Wilson, who checks in a blink-of-an-eye later at 6.49. Junior Tyler Parshay of BG certainly has an outside shot at podium with a 6.53 as well.
Top seed in the girls 300 meters is MA’s Breanna Braham who checks in 38.94, although Lisa Raye is the defending champion and also in the field. Expect anything to happen here, but Raye would have to be the favorite. NH D2 State Champ Gilford’s Macy Sawyer is NH’s top seed checking in with a 41.25. Winnacunnet’s Owen Janetos is the top seed in the boys 300 with a 35.15, but this is New Englands so expect him to have stiff competition as Trumbull CT’s Sebastian Perez and Lyme CT’s Owen Rich are right there as well. And don’t sleep on Pinkerton’s Morrison who is the 4th seed! Con-Val’s Ross Stephens and Bow’s Kody McCranie should also be considered podium contenders as they are ranked 9th and 14th respectively both under 36 seconds.
Middle Distance/Distance

Kicking off the distance events as always is the mile. Lyme CT’s Gilbert Chase is the top seed with a blazing 4:46.34 seed time. NH State Record holder, OR’s Haley Kavanagh is the 2nd seed and is coming off a huge PR of 4:50 at Valentine’s. She is certainly in top form at the right time of the season! On the boys side, Newton South’s Alex Friedman is the top seed at 4:19.83, but expect a dog fight in this one. BG’s Matthew Giardina may be seeded 5th, but rattled off 2 sub 4:20 efforts last weekend, with his best being 4:18. Watch for teammate Carson Fischer as he is a contender to podium ranked 6th.
2024 New England Champ Brooke Strauss is back to defend her title in the 1k. The UConn commit comes in with a best 2025 time of 2:51.05. 2nd seed is Conard CT’s Liv Sherry who is a Georgetown commit. Expect NH D1 Champ Bedford’s Mikita Barry to make her presence known in this one as well. On the boys side, Hamden CT’s Alexander Medina is the top seed at 2:29.55. Watch for Winnacunnet’s Ryan Zumbach to certainly threaten the podium as the D1 State Champ is the 9th seed at 2:33.92. Keep in mind 2024 champ was Bedford’s Jacob Redman, who won it out of the slower heat!

The girls 600 sees Naugatuck, CT’s Lauren Kropo as the heavy favorite with a 1:33.08! But don’t overlook Bow’s Hannah Pawlowski as a podium threat as she is ranked 7th with a 1:38.52. The D2 champ seems ready. Pinkerton’s Sarah Rzasa and Timberlane’s Charlotte Beaudoin have outside shots at the podium as well. The 600 on the boys side is insane with 4 athletes at 1:21 and change. Weston, MA’s Ben Tavares steps up as the top seed, with MV’s Mychal Reynolds and Londonderry’s Josh Twomey as NH’s top seeds both with a 1:25.60.

The girls 2 mile presents another chance for NH to make its mark as OR’s Mackenzie Cook is the top seed with a 10:45.55. She has had her best season yet, but will face stiff competition most likely from Emily Flagg of Whitinsville Christian, MA and Keaney Bayha of Pilgrim RI. Don’t overlook Exeter’s Alexis Paterna or Concord’s Shelly Smith as podium threats either. The boys side sees a heavy favorite in Marblehead’s Nathaniel Assa with a 9:05.30. A strong contender for an All-New England honor has to be Con-Val’s Will Simard, the D2 State Champ. Simard has had his best track season ever, expect him to ride the wave to a great performance here. Also a contender, Hanover’s Andrew Valentino, who although he is ranked 10th, at 9:28 he is only a couple seconds out of the top 6. And then we have Giardina, who will be doubling back and even though his seed is not among the top 2-3, Giardina has been training for this time of the season. We are assuming he has been training for just this situation. Expect him to podium at the very least.
Field Events

The boys high jump sees the top 4 athletes with a 6’8″ seed. Wow. Top seeds from NH are MV’s Owen Turner and John Stark’s Rio Calle, both at 6’4″. The girls high jump has 2 who have cleared 5’6″. Timberlane’s D1 State Champ Danielle Bates is in the thick of this competition as she has cleared 5’4″! The girls Long jump sees CT’s Vanessa Agyemang as the top seed with a mark of 19’5″. West’s Eshaya Lauder checks in as NH’s top seed with a 18’2″ mark and is a strong podium contender! The top seed in the boys long jump is CT’s Michael Ahoua at 23’4.75″, just 1 inch off the CT state record. Top NH seed is Londonderry’s Chase Burris at 21’9.75″. The has stiff comp with 2 others over 23′. Check out the boys shot put as there are 4 athletes with marks over 60! led by top seed Chris Amy of Norwich Free Academy in CT. Top NH seed is of course North’s Darius Smith with his 53’6.5″. The girls shot put also seeds a CT athlete as the top seed as Maya Quaranta of Sacred Heart Academy with a toss of 44’7.25″. The top 4 are all over 40′. NH’s top seed is Windham’s Brynn Johnson at 34’10.25″.
