Day 1 D2 Championship Recap

NH Indoor Divisional State Championship Meet Hub

Girls Results (Courtesy of Lancer Timing): The Girls’ High Jump set the tone for Day 1 of the Division 2 NH State Championships held at UNH this past Sunday. As expected, with several entrants over 5’0″ on the seed list, the competition was fierce and super exciting as the event took center stage! It came down to 2 athletes #1 seed Bow’s Camden Wilson and Somersworth’s Savanna Comeau. In the end, Wilson was the one to clear 5’4″ to win over Comeau’s super impressive 5’2″ clearance. Wilson joined 4 others in a tie for the D2 Record! Wilson’s teammate Madison Pfister tied with Plymouth’s Sophia Daigneault for 3rd as they both cleared 5’0″ but went out at 5’2″. After those two, there was a 3 way tie for 5th as PCA’s Ruthie Sherrill, as well as Bow’s Emma Bryant and Keegan O’Meara all cleared 4’8″. That’s right Bow had 4 high jumpers score!

Next on the track was the much-anticipated 4x800m relay. True to form, the favorites and returning champs in this event, Oyster River led from gun to tape. Haley Bezanson, Oliva Kavanagh, Jahrie Houle, and Maddy Cook gained separation early as expected to roll to another D2 title in 10:06. The real race developed behind them as Hollis/Brookline, St. Thomas and Coe-Brown battled for the runner up honors. In the end the 3 teams were separated by just 1 second as the Cavaliers outlasted St. Thomas and the Black Bear to take second in 10:20.67 to St. Thomas’s 10:21.08 to CBNA’s 10:21.67. Hanover would hold off a hard charging Souhegan and Samantha Swanbon to take 5th in 10:30 to the Sabers’ 10:33.51.

Boys Results (Courtesy of Lancer Timing): The boys’ high jump may have generated the loudest roars from the crowd. At 6’2″ there were still 4 athletes with Souhegan’s Brody Smith, Merrimack Valley’s Owen Turner, Somersworth’s Orlando Wondal and Con-Val’s Griffin Schultz all vying for D2 supremacy. Smith would win as he was the only one of the four clearing 6’2″ gaining a valuable 10 points for the team chances. He then cleared 6’3″ and 6’4″ wowing the crowd. MV’s Turner had the cleanest competition of the remaining 3 and would claim second. Wondal would be the surprise to place 3rd with Schultz 4th. Kingswood’s Seamus Kelly would take 5th and PCA’s Sam Monahan took 6th to round out the scoring.

In the 4x800m, we anticipated a battle between Oyster River and Coe-Brown. Behind a great lead off leg by up by Siddharth Sanjay, the Bobcats had a strong lead. Brendan Banafato ran strong to maintain it, but it was their freshman, Jace Dinnan who blew the race wide open with a blazing final lap. He then handed off to anchor Oliver Lehman with an insurmountable lead to finish things claiming OR’s first title in this event in several years. Off of Sanjay’s lead off leg, it seemed like CBNA was playing catch up the entire race, but they held on for 2nd in 8:42.69 as anchor leg Patrick Youngs held off a motivated Oliver Schartner who led St. Thomas to 3rd in 8:42.97. Milford’s Grant Skorupan brought the Spartans all the way back to edge Newmarket (5th 9:05.09) and Hollis/Brookline (6th 9:05.13) respectively.
