In the preview we identified Hopkinton as the team to beat, and Hopkinton’s Maddy Lane as the runner to beat, and that prophecy came true, with Lane amassing a lead right from the start. Lane wouldn’t even feel a challenge, looking over her should 1100 meters in with no one in sight. Making up the chase pack was Profile’s Sylvie Brown, fresh off her third place at the MS Meet of Champions the night before and Lane’s teammate Maisie Emerson. Shortly behind them was Hopkinton’s Rose Afflerbach, InterLakes Elsa Bartlett, Sanborn’s Sophie Thurlow, Mascoma’s Paige Reney, Monadnock’s Emma Short, White Mountain’s Devyn Cyr and Raymond’s Leah Unger.

Lane would roll through the mile in just about 5:30, with over half a minute back to Emerson, Brown, Thurlow and Bartlett with Afflerbach off the back a little. Behind them a group of three in Unger, Short and Cyr before the masses started to descend on the mile, then ascend to the reservoir.
With Lane away for good, a great battle for second was going on between Emerson and Brown, having stretched away from Thurlow and Bartlett by the two mile. Unger at this point was in a bit of no man’s land being chased by Reney and Cyr. Afflerbach and Short would round out the top ten through the two mile.
With Lane gone, finishing solo in 18:09, Emerson would lead Brown with 1000 meters to go, but Brown would take the advantage on the uphill portion, finishing in 19:39 with Emerson six seconds back, the only other two girls breaking 20 minutes. Bartlett would lead Thurlow in, with Unger running a great second half, finishing in 6th place. Reney would lead Cyr in under 22 minutes, with Short leading Hopkinton’s Elison Gregory in to round out the top 10.

Receiving medals and punching their tickets to Meet of Champions, in order – Victoria Rivera-Taylor of Monadnock, Claire Harris of St. Thomas, Calliegh Duncan of Campbell, Sarah McGranaghan of Hillsboro-Deering, Katelyn Kreycik of St. Thomas, Mackenzie Morgan of White Mountains, Eloise Abbott of Winnisquam, Sydney Beam of Wilton, Elizabeth Stewart of PCA, Avery Viglione of Mascenic, Emma Johnson of PCA, Raphaela Monteiro of St Thomas, and Ulitta Page of Prospect Mountain.
Hopkinton now had three in the top ten, with Hannah Clarner in 14th and Afflerbach in 19th to round out their scoring. Teammates Mabel Dustin and Ella Lunquist would round to the varsity roster in 26th and 29th places respectively, giving Hopkinton a very low 27 points on the day.
Once the dust settled behind Hopkinton, Mascoma Valley would come out next best, led by Reney, scoring 111 points, with Campbell and Trinity rounding out the Meet of Champions qualifiers with 120 points and 130 points respectively.

The D3 boys race got off to a different style start, with Fall Mountain’s Elijah Bodanza sitting back letting Newfound’s Colin Foster and Hopkinton’s Max Goupil set the pace upfront, with Mascoma’s Carl Russell Conant’s Ben Dumont and Aaron Graham, Hopkinton’s James Laver and Liam Tripod, Campbell’s Mason Gardner, and Profile’s Colin Reeder and Thatcher Brown all in the mix at the 1000 meter mark. Disaster was averted when that front group almost missed the turn at 1000 meters, quickly corrected and put back on track and headed towards the mile.
But this lead group would get whittled down by the mile, with just Bodanza, Goupil and Foster in the front going 5:10, with Russell running five seconds off this front pack. Gardner would be through next, followed by Ruffo and Gardner before the masses charged through the mile mark.

Bodanza would lead the three up the hill, with Russell hanging tough with gravity stretching out the pack behind. By the two mile, Bodanza had opened a 15 second gap back to Goupil and Foster, then another 15 back to Russell, then ten seconds on a gaining Lavers and Tripod of Hopkinton and Gardner. Teammates Reeder and Brown of Profile, Dumont and Graham of Conant, and Newmarket’s Benjamin Patrick were all in the hunt for a top ten spot.
When the race returned to the park fields, Bodanza now had a yawning lead, with Foster out on Goupil by about 20 meters. And the placement would remain that way, with Goupil’s coach telling him to save it for next week. Bodanza would run 16:43, with Foster slipping under the 17 minute mark 11 seconds back on Bodanza. Russell would stay out on a hard charging Lavers and Tripod, with Dumont and Gardner in next. Reeder and Brown would be split by Graham and that would round out the top eleven.

Behind them and securing a medal and a trip to Meet of Champions, in order – Zach Mckeown of PCA, Patrick, Cullen Desrochers of Winnisquam, Simeon Howard and Judah Howard of PCA, Karson Rogers of Mascoma, James Peavey of PCA, Conall Jumper of St Thomas, Ransom Donigain of Mascoma, Lance Labens of White Mountain, William Litica of Derryfield and William Reinhardt of Gilford.
Hopkinton would win this one easy as well, scoring 44 points, with the help of Finnegan Kovar (12th), Jax Marshall (24th), Michael Crosby (37th) and Jacques McCrillis (40th). They would double up on Portsmouth Christian’s 88 points. Interestingly PCA had no one in the top 12 but would stack them in with 13-16-17-19-31 to better Conant at 109, and Profile at 190.
These teams will race next weekend in Hopkinton at the Meet of Champions.
