The Rest of the Story
Jen Thompson took the lead from Cartwright and Griffin coming back across the park, maybe 500 meters to go, eyeballs out, caution to the wind. She led as they approached the finish line, only to collapse to her knees with about 50-60 meters left. She staggered to her feet, maybe fell another couple of times, finally fell across the finish line in 3rd. I ran to her, thinking she was near death, or at least heart-broken. She smiled weakly up at me and said, “Well, I’m the best in the state at three-point-OH miles.” Jen went on to have a decent 2 year running career at William & Mary, before she had a career ending back injury at the start of her junior year, incurred moving something heavy back into her dorm room. – Jeff Johnson

Editor’s Note: Due to the graciousness of Jeff Johnson, John Goegel and others, we are carrying over a series begun during the track season on our sister site, newhampshiretrackandfield.com . For those of you that don’t know, Jeff Johnson was employee #1 of Nike. He actually is the one responsible for naming the company. Fortunately for us, he was also a world class photographer of our great sports in the 1960s and 1970s during which he captured thousands of sports photographs. We are honored and thankful for their choice to use our sites as their medium for sharing their passion. We hope our presentations can do them justice!

Nice blast from the past. Wild how Derryfield looks so much different but the same. I believe Emily Cartwright was running for Keene by this time, not Mascenic. They moved to Surry after Bret graduated in 1986 and both Natalie and Emily finished their careers at Keene. I don’t ever remember those uniforms and we would likely still had them in inventory when I took the helm!
