This coming Saturday one of the more unique track and field meets takes place at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The 35th New England Indoor Track and Field Championship invites the very best from all 6 New England states to compete in the largest, maybe only, regional championship in the United States. One of the reasons the northeast, particularly New England, is the mecca of indoor track and field, this meet is always competitive with many surprises! Top 6 in each event earn a medal and All-New England honors!
Sprints and Hurdles
On the girls side look for Pinkerton’s Jordan Wheaton and Bedford’s Anika Scott in the High Hurdles as they are ranked 4th (8.40) and 7th (8.55) respectively. The top seed is Leonaya Knox from Hillhouse in CT seeded at 8.06. Bedford’s Christopher Chong is NH’s top seed in the boys Highs at 7.94 ranking him 17th. Stonington, CT’s Joshua Mooney is the top seed at 7.26.
The girls Dash sees freshman Lisa Raye from Rhode Island as the top seed with a time of 7.10! NH occupies seeds 15-18 with
Merrimack’s Alexis Best, South’s Iyana Braswell, Kennett’s Aida Wheat and South’s Soraya Ross, all between 7.32 and 7.37. These 4 will have to improve to the low 7.2s to have a shot at medaling. The boy qualifiers from NH will also have to improve some as AJ Sebastien (Memorial) and Tim Kelm (PCA) are ranked 13th and 15th respectively and at 6.59 and 6.60. Low to mid 6.5s will podium.
In the girls 300, Bedford’s Mikita Barry is ranked 14th at 41.38. Ali Murphy of Norton, MA is top seed at 40.14. Matter of fact one would have to at least break into the 40 second range to have a shot at medaling. Similarly, NH boys will have to break into the 35’s to have a shot at the podium. Keene’s Chris Stevens, although ranked 12th, could have an outside shot with a seed time of 36.06. Also, don’t count out OR’s Ty Dorrow who comes in with a seed of 36.35.
Mid-Distance
E.O. Smith CT’s Gabriella Hernandez is the top seed in the girls 600m in a blazing 1:33.17 and this definitely places her as the favorite. However, look for Dover’s Anique Poulin and Bedford’s Samantha Ducharme to give All-New England a shot as they come in as the 7th and 8th seed respectively. The boys side sees our first top seed from the Granite State in Coe-Brown’s Gavin Demas at 1:22.74. Look for Londonderry’s Sean Clegg to also represent not just on the podium but may be the actual favorite as he clocked 1:21 earlier in the season. Regardless, this may be NH’s strongest event on the day.
The girls’ 1000m sees Newton South’s Amelia Everett as the top seed with a time of 2:51.60, but seeded 5th is Sophia Gorriaran from Rhode Island. Gorriarian is the nation’s top middle distance runner; look for her as the favorite here and a real threat to the meet record of 2:48.25
currently held by Bedford’s Leya Salis back in 2017. Dover’s Isabel McIntyre is NH’s top seed here.
Similarly, on the boys side, while the top seed is Camden Reiland of North Andover MA at 2:32, the true favorite is St. Raphael’s (RI) Devan Kipyego. He is a 4:01 miler and has made no secret of his goal to break the current New England record of 2:25 in this event. Like the 600, the 1k is well represented by Granite Staters! 1st time indoor athlete, D2 champ, CBNA’s Jamie Lano checks in as the 4th seed and Hanover’s Lucian Gleiser is the 7th seed. Lano’s best time is a 2:31, but he seems to be just scratching the surface as is Gleiser who continues to improve.
Distance
In the girls 1 mile, the top 6 seeds from other states range from 4:57 to 5:04. When you look down the list you see a triumvirate of NH runners in PCA’s Brianna Malone, OR’s Mackenzie Cook and Haley Kavanagh ranked 19th – 21st. Remember these seed times 
come directly from Divisionals where all 3 were doubling or tripling back. If they decide to race the mile look for Malone to challenge for the win, while Cook and Kavanagh will certainly challenge for a spot on the podium. This will likely be out of the slower heat so the top seeds need to pay attention.
On the boys side, CBNA’s Aidan Cox is the top seed with his 1500 time of 3:58 converted to a 4:17. He will be challenged by Ryan Connolly (North Andover MA) and William Liu (Acton-Boxborough). As with the girls, don’t count our Bedford’s Jacob Redman. Ranked 14th, he may be in the slower heat, but Redman just clocked a 1:55 this past weekend at BU. He is just figuring it out and will be a factor regardless.
In the 2 mile, Malone is ranked 8th, but seriously can challenge for this
title as well. Cook is ranked 12th and if she runs this fresh, look for her to podium. Of course, easier said than done as Shelton, CT’s Hannah Andrejczk is top seed at 10:46. The boys side sees Cox as top seed but he is opting to compete in the mile only, which leaves Ritikh Prakash as the top seed from Mass. NH’s next top seeds are BG’s Matthew Giardina, Londonderry’s Ryan Fortin, and CBNA’s Tyler Tkaczyk. All ran measured efforts at divisions and all have better personal records. Expect both to challenge for the podium even if they are in a slower heat. This race is wide open.
Field Events
Jordan Wheaton returns in the High Jump as NH’s top seed at 5’2″ tied for 4th along with a host of others as well as Ella Goulas of Concord. Top seeds are tied at 5’6″. Hanover’s Ian Solberg is seeded 3rd at 6’3″ but understand his best this season is 6’5″ which would be a solid 2nd. Dar Jankovic from E.O. Smith of CT is the top seed at 6’7″.
In the girls long jump, Bedford’s Scott returns as the 15th seed with a seed of 17’3″. If she can improve just a few inches, she can be in the thick of the medal contention. On the boys side, Memorial’s Alexis Rivera is seeded 18th with his D1 champ jump of 21’1.75″. Similar to the girls, he would have to improve another 8-10 inches to get in medal contention. Look for Conant’s Ben Sawyer as well as Exeter’s Michael Dettore who has a season’s best of 21’7″.
Watch for D1 Champ, Nashua North’s Madelyn Novak in the Shot Put as she is ranked 11th. Top seed is Brooke Serak from Bishop Feehan in Massachusetts with a mark of 41’8.25″. Novak’s teammate, Toby Brown is NH’s top seed at 3rd with his championship mark of 55’5.75″. Top seed is Mass’s Jacob Cookinham with a 66’+ mark!
