The 2023 Merrimack Invitational did not disappoint! While some of the results held true to the seedings, there were of course surprises and as always great competition. Hats off to the folks of Merrimack High School Track and Field as they organized and pulled off a great event along with Lancer Timing! Replay of event is below.
Sprints and Hurdles
Holding true in the 100 meters, South senior Iyanna Braswell took this one with a 12.62 lean over the hard charging Anushka Chavda (CBNA) who crossed in 12.67. Dover sophomore, Demaiyah Woodard was also a factor crossing in 12.81. Budding superstar, North’s Jhanelle Thomas won the 200 in a super close battle with South’s Soraya Ross 26.17 to 26.23. Pinkerton’s Hannah Sippel was third in 26.48. Thomas won this after she also won the 400 in 58.79. Portsmouth’s Lily Jenkins was 2nd in 59.86.
Once again, Pinkerton’s Jordan Wheaton swept the hurdle events breaking the High Hurdle meet record by breaking the tape in 14.75. She won the 300 hurdles in 45.77.
Nashua South and Pinkerton both broke the meet record in the 4×100 with South winning in 48.67 to Pinkertons’s 49.61. Wow!
On the boys side, and a bit of a surprise, Pinkerton’s Caden Michaud nipped Memorial’s AJ Sebastien at the line to win 11.26 to 11.28! Samuel Jones of Salem was 3rd in 11.40. Jones would come back however to win the 200 in 22.80 over Michaud’s 22.99. Londonderry’s Sean Clegg won the showdown of sorts with CBNA’s Gavin Demas winning the 400 in 50.67. Portsmouth’s Jake Haley was a strong second in 51.17 with Demas 3rd.
South’s Rory Olsen also swept both hurdle events breaking 1 meet record in the process. He won the High Hurdles in 15.70 over Souhegan’s Cole Henderson’s 15.89. He clocked 39.47 in the 300, which is the new meet record. He was certainly pushed by Sullivan in this won who also broke 40 seconds to clock 39.58.
Pinkerton broke the meet record in the 4×100 crossing the line in 43.35 for the win.
Middle Distance/Distance
Dover’s Anique Poulin’s prowess from indoor has now been witnessed in outdoors courtesy of her 800 win crossing the line in 2:22.31. Concord’s Chloe Gudas was 2nd in 2:23.88. The 1600 was a battle between 3 tough runners. Salem’s Lily Thomas won in a kick in 5:26.05, Portsmouth’s Mia Scherr was 2nd in 5:26.56, and Exeter’s Meadow Gregory was 3rd in 5:28.15. Coe-Brown’s Sheldyn Fisher won the 3200 in 11:43.86.
On the boys’ side, Exeter’s Nathan Mikulsky led gun to tape to win the 800 in 1:58.94. 
Pinkerton’s Nathan Binda and Theodore Davis were 2nd and 3rd respectively each at 2:00. Coe-Brown’s Jamie Lano won the 1600 in 4:24.51. He ran patiently for the first 2 laps behind the always strong Avery Crowell (Portsmouth) who rolled to 2nd in 4:31.01. Londonderry’s Ryan Fortin won the 3200 in 9:39.84. A hard charging Nikhil Chavda (CBNA) continues to see his times drop as he placed 2nd in 9:42.58.
Jumps
Wheaton made it a hat trick with winning the High Jump clearing 5’4″. Concord’s Ella Goulas placed 2nd clearing 5’2″ with North’s Kelechi Okorie placing 3rd also clearing 5’2″. Concord’s Kendall Barton continues the family tradition winning the Pole Vault clearing 10’2″ with teammate Madeline Muller clearing 9’8″ for 2nd. Host school Kailey Dillon won the long jump with a 15’11.75″ just 3 inches up on South’s Braswell while Dillon’s teammate Alexis Best crushed the meet record by over a foot in the Triple with a 38’8″ jump! Goulas was 23nd in this one with a mark of 36’8″.
Speaking of meet records, Londonderry’s Andrew Kullman cleared 6’6″ to win. South’s Sami Witta placed 2nd clearing 6’2″. CBNA’s Finn Hill cleared 11′ to
win the Pole Vault while Concord’s Alain Twite was the lone jumper to exceed 20 feet to win the Long Jump. North’s Jack Sullivan won the triple soaring to 42’4″ with Exeter’s Thoren Kersten-Guiler who hopped skipped and jumped to a 41’9″.
Throws
Pinkerton’s Briana Danis swept the Shot (35’8.5″) and Discus (125’3″) while North’s Madelyn Novak won the Javelin with a 123’10” toss. She also placed 2nd in the Discus.
North’s Darius Smith won the shot with a mark of 50’8″ while CBNA’s Zach Bistany also tossed a bomb in the discus winning with a 151’11”. Pinkerton’s Jacob Packowski won the javelin with a toss of 158’11”.
Teams
Could this have been a preview of the Division 1 State Championships??? Pinkerton girls squeaked out a 2 point win over Concord. We will see. Pinkerton boys made is an Astro sweep as they won the boys with Coe-Brown placing 2nd as a team.
