Bragging rights are up for grabs at Exeter High School for the Seacoast Championships. FUN FACT: Last year’s meet featured the boys and girls team champions from D1 and D2. Coe-Brown swept the D2 championship meet and Portsmouth Boys and Exeter Girls won the D1 championships last year. Last years Seacoast meet was won by the Exeter Girls and in a bit of an upset the Oyster River boys took home the 2022 Seacoast title.
This year the team favorite on the boys side has to be the Coe-Brown Black Bears, whom may be the best team in NH regardless of division, but don’t count out Oyster River for a repeat performance with possible the top athlete in the meet (Ty Dorrow) and depth in the fields.
The favorite on the girls side may be Oyster River although the home team Exeter has point scorers all over the place. The meet is never short on individual state champions and potential New England champions and this years meet should be no different.
Girls to Watch
Lily Jenkins (Portsmouth): The Clippers sprinter has taken her talent to the next level with range from 100-400 meters. She’s the top seed in the 100m and 2nd seed in the 200.
Erin Carty (Oyster River): Blazing 200m seed time of 25.91 and also entered in the 400m.
Brianna Malone (Portsmouth Christian): One of the top runners in New England. She’s entered at 2:13.27 in the 800m. The meet record is a blazing 2:08 set by Hannah Parker.
Haley Kavanagh (Oyster River): Top seed this spring in the 1600m
Mackenzie Cook (Oyster River):Top Seed in the 3200m by over a minute!
Rachel Poulin (Exeter) Top seed in the 100 hurdles and 2nd seed in the Jav.
Portsmouth 4×100: Potential at a meet record comes in with a faster seed time than the current record.
Josephine Malloy (Coe-Brown): Top seed in the LJ.
Madeleine Grenier (Coe-Brown): top seed and only girl in the disc with a toss over 100ft.
Boys to Watch
Ty Dorow (Oyster River): He “arrived” last year, but has been a machine on the track this year, sub 11, sub 23, and sub 50. He will look to take home the 100m and 200m.
Brady Ash (Sanborn): Many of the Seacoast meet records are out of reach, the 400m is not one of them with Ash entered with a seed time .5 seconds faster than the record (50.66).
Coe-Brown’s Big 4: Jamie Lano in the 800, Aidan Cox in the 800m, Tyler Tkaczyk in the 1600m, and Gavin Demas in the 1600m.
Coe-Brown’s 4×400: top seed with a time more than a second faster than the meet record.
Oyster River HJ Crew: Usually your lucky to have a boy clear 6ft, Oyster River has 3!
Wyatt Patterson (Winnacunnet): seeded at 13’2” in the pole vault more than a foot higher than 2 seed.
Michael Dettore (Exeter): Top Seed in the LJ.
Tayshawn Sheppard (Somersworth): top seed in the TJ.
Ethan Sawyer (Spaulding): Top seed in the shot put by more than 2 feet!
Zachary Bistany (Coe-Brown): Seeded at 152ft in the disc more than 27 feet ahead of the two seed.
Jason Yeaton (Portsmouth): top seed in the Jav at 160ft.
Races of the Meet
Boys Side:
The boy’s 800 meters should be the race of the meet. It features 4 guys that have already gone sub 2 and another 3 with the potential to do so. With only a week before the Divisional Championships, I don’t anticipate a tactical race and instead think all these guys will be going for a fast time. Aidan Cox is moving down from his specialty in the 3200/1600 to challenge some guys with 51 second quarter mile speed. Jamie Lano was blazing in the 1000m all winter enters with the top seed. Jake Haley of Portsmouth might have the fastest high end speed having already split 50 seconds in the 4×4. Exeter’s Mikulsky might have the most races under 2 minutes this season. This will be a fun one to watch.
Girls Side
I’m excited to watch the girls 200 meter run. OR’s Carty is the top seed with a blistering 25.91, but Portsmouth’s Jenkins continues to run faster and faster every week. Demaiyah Woodard of Dover is still a relatively newcomer to track but continues to impress each week while Coe-Brown’s Anushka Chavda is no stranger to fast times of winning. All these ladies are capable to pushing each other to super fast times.
Other Happenings at the Meet
New Hampshire Track and Field.com will be livestreaming the event, the Exeter Track and Field Boosters will have a snack setup along with a raffle, T-shirts for sale, meet programs with heats and lane assignments, and the famous Seacoast Meet Champion T shirt awarded to the winner of each event.
