Oyster River’s Kavanagh Makes Nike Cross Nationals!

Nike Cross Northeast Region Results

Congratulations to Oyster River’s Haley Kavanagh who is be the Granite State’s lone representative on the national level this coming weekend at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. As been her style over the second half of the season, Kavanagh negative split the hilly 5k course at Bowdoin Park by crossing midway in 9:33 and 20th place only to work her way up to 9th overall covering the second half in 9:24 to cross in 18:58! She was the 5th and final individual qualifier. Individuals qualify by being one of the top 5 individuals outside of qualifying teams.

Kavanagh’s teammate Mackenzie Cook placed 13th overall in 19:05 to also make the All-Northeast team! Perhaps having one of their best team efforts of the season, Oyster River girls placed a gutsy 4th in the Northeast with 110 points, only 12 points off of New England Champs Champlain Valley of Vermont. Once again their third and fourth scorers were Haley Bezanson and Neely Roy, who both ran 20:11, but it was Madelyn Cook who stepped up big time as their 5th scorer to place a few seconds behind in 20:15 producing perhaps their best team performance of the season.

Joining Kavanagh and Cook on the All-Northeast team was Bishop Guertin’s Matthew Giardina. Bouncing back after a tough New Englands and perhaps having his best race of the fall, the NH MOC and D1 Champ placed a gutsy 10th overall in 16:17 to come within one spot of qualifying for NXN. Only a junior, Giardina will be the 4th best returner next year. Keene’s Sullivan Sturtz was the next best for NH placing 36th in 16:43. D2 Champ, Coe-Brown’s Jamie Lano was a few seconds after him crossing in 16:47, while D3 Champ Gilford’s Bocelli Howland-Vlahakis ran 16:55 and was the fastest freshman in the field!

Congratulations to Phillips Exeter’s Byron Grevious who became the Nike Cross Northeast Region Champ covering the course in 15:32!
