This coming Saturday one of the more unique track and field meets takes place at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The 36th New England Indoor Track and Field Championship invites the very best from all 6 New England states to compete in the largest, maybe only, regional championship in the United States. One of the reasons the northeast, particularly New England, is the mecca of indoor track and field, this meet is always competitive with many surprises! Top 6 in each event earn a medal and All-New England honors!
Sprints and Hurdles
After her incredible Division 1 Championships, most want to know about how Bedford’s Anika Scott stacks up. In the High Hurdles, the answer is #2 seed with her blazing 8.07 seed time, which is a scant .01 behind top seeded Leonaya Knox of Hillhouse, CT. Oyster River’s Erin Carty is seeded 9th in contention for All-New England. On the boys side, Pinkerton’s Matthew Morrison is NH’s top seed and is ranked 5th with his 7.61. Bedford’s Christopher Chong is seeded 8th. Brockton’s Lucas Andrade is top seed, rather comfortably with a 7.44.
Last year, West Warwick’s (RI) Lisa Raye came in as the top seed with a 7.10 as a freshman. This year, she also comes as a top seed with a 6.89 and once again is the favorite. NH’s Alexis Best (Merrimack) and South’s Nyah Musa are seeded 13th and 14th. Windham’s Kevin Brooks, the d1 Champ, is ranked 3rd in the 55 Dash (6.45) with Pinkerton’s Morrison seeded right behind in 4th with a 6.47. With PCA’s Tim Kelm and Trinity’s Nehemiah Oyaronbi ranked 7th and 10th, NH boasts 4 seeds in the top 10. This may be one of the best contingents the Granite State has sent to New Englands.
The girls 300 meters may be the most exciting, closest contests on the day. While NH State record holder, Central’s Harriet Barber, is the top seed with her 39.59, West Warwick’s Raye matches her seed time and her sister, Xenia is only .07 behind with her own 39.66. Get your popcorn ready for this one! On the boys’ side, Windsor CT’s Maxim Copeland and Haverhill’s Natanael Vifo Catala are the top seeds at 34.32. NH’s Brooks is ranked 7th with his 35.27.
Mid-Distance
The girls’ 1000 meters is the first individual middle distance event and has Glastonbury CT’s Brooke Strauss as the top seed with a 2:53.22. Matter of fact, the Nutmeg State boasts the top 3 seeds in the 1k. NH’s Mikita Barry (Bedford), Anique Poulin (Dover) and Alanna Hagen (Newmarket) are ranked 9th-11th. All will be hoping to grab All-New England honors by placing in the top 6. The boys side sees a different story as NH has the top 2 seeds. By virtue of their historical battle at D2s earlier this month, Hanover’s Lucian Gleiser and Coe-Brown’s Jamie Lano are the top 2 seeds at 2:27 and change. The next best is Newtown, CT’s Soheib Dissa almost 3 seconds back at 2:30. Do not count out Bedford’s Jacob Redman as he may be in the slower heat because of his 2:34 seed time. He did run 1:53 last weekend and seems primed to run incredibly fast. Look for him to join Gleiser and Lano on the podium.
NH’s top seeds in the girls 600 are Exeter’s Clara Knab (8th-1:38.97) and Bedford’s Samantha Ducharme (9th-1:38.98). Both will be shooting for the top 6. Top seed is RI’s Emily Belvin at 1:36.57. The boys 600 has Bedford’s Jacob Bekkering as NH’s top seed at #8 with his 1:22.89. Brookline’s Cameron Walter is the heavy favorite here as he is seeded at 1:21.13, but also has a PR of 1:20.96.
Distance
The girls 1 mile may be another can’t miss event as CT veterans Katherin Bohlke (Newington) and Tess Sherry (Conard) have the fastest PRs headed into Saturday, both in the 4:40s. Wellesley MA’s Charlotte Tuxbury is the top seed heading into this one. Oyster River’s Haley Kavanagh is certainly a contender sitting at an uncontested 4:59.31. The boys mile sees Noble’s (ME) Maddox Jordan as the top seed at 4:17.23 with Staples, CT Benjamin Lorenz also seeded at 4:17, but Jordan has an all-time PR of 4:12. NH’s top seed is PCA’s Jonas Teeter at 17th.
CT boasts the top 2 seeds in the girls 2 mile in Hanna Andrejczk (Shelton – 10:54) and Ava Malagisi (Ridgefield-10:55), but keep in mind Oyster River’s Mackenzie Cook, seeded12th at 11:13, has run a 10:07 3k earlier this season. This converts to a 10:47 and certainly makes her a contender! Cambridge Rindge & Latin-MA Paulino Guevara Mateo is the top seed in the 2 mile at 9:21.32, Expect BG’s Matthew Giardina to nab all New England as he is seeded 7th at 9:29.59.
Field Events
Bedford’s Scott is the new state record holder in the Long Jump as she smashed the record at the State Championships by 2 feet. She is the top seed entering Saturday by more than a foot. That is what happens when you eclipse 20 feet! Merrimack’s Best is seeded 6th with her 18’0.5″. Look for her to crack the podium as well! Looking at the boys side, thanks to Winnacunnet’s Oliver Duffy and his 23’5.5″ soaring leap at Divisions, NH boasts both #1 seeds. Trinity’s Rere Edokpolo has a great shot at the podium as he is 6th seed at 22’1.5″.
Looking at the girls’ High Jump and holy cow, Norton MA’s Zoe Santos is the top seed clearing 5’8″!!! NH’s top seed is state champion Concord’s Ella Goulas who is tied for 7th with a seed of 5’4″. The same can be said for Hillhouse’s Khalil Antoine as he is the top seed at 6’9″. Duffy is once again NH’s top seed in this event at 6’2″.
Mascoma Valley’s Georgia Kondi is NH’s top seed in the Shot at 17. North’s Darius Smith is NH’s top seed on the boys’ side at 53’3.25″ at #8. Top seed is CT’s Thomas Matlock at 61’8″! He does have some competition, as there are 2 others at 58′!
We will be there as part of the State Running Network’s livestream. We will also be covering on Instagram! Snapping pics!! Good luck to all!
