MOC Mile 45 Years Ago!

This week we celebrate the return of not only the recently completed NHIAA Division State Championships, but the Meet of Champions also returns this Saturday after 2 years.  These events have been around for a long time teenagers!!!

To Today’s High School Track Athlete,

Did you know there was incredible competition and racing before your were born?  Before internet?  Before Instagram, Snapchat? Before LancerTiming?  Athletes didn’t wear super shoes.  Athletes didn’t race on all-weather tracks.  They simply laced up their shoes and raced the FULL MILE! Thanks to an alum of New Hampshire Track and Field, we get to look back some 45 years ago!  Thanks Jay Smith!

The 1976 MOC was on June 5th at Salem HS Track.  New Englands, the following week, were at Winnacunnet High School.  They had FOUR heats of the mile. Heat 4 was stacked with Larry Reed, Dave Severance, Mark Kimball, Guy Stearns, Dan Deroo of West, Dave Dion of Dover, Tim Reever and Tim Dean of Laconia, Roldan of Timberlane, and myself (Jay Smith of Concord High).

Larry Reed ran 4:18.0, which was a new state record at the time by 3.1 seconds.

Severance doubled in the 2 mile and won in 9:27.5 beating Kevin Haddock of Gilford, BJ Fowler of Laconia,  Dion of Dover, and Dean Kimball and Craig Fram of Timberlane.
