Athlete Feature: Bedford’s Shanna Scribner

When did you start competing in track and field?

I started competing in track and field during the winter of my freshman year of high school, 2013-2014.

What is your favorite track and field event?

This is very tough. I love almost every event that I have competed in. I would have to go with javelin as my favorite.

If you could do any event in track and field, which one would it be and why?

If I could do any event, it would be probably be javelin because I enjoy the throwing events and it is hypnotizing to watch it fly.

Describe your favorite workout:

My favorite workout is going through throwing progressions, then pole vault practice, and finishing with a lower-body lift day; specifically deadlift days.

Describe your favorite race/competition memory:

My favorite competition memory was in UMaine during my 2015-16 winter season. I was running back and forth between shot put and my 55m hurdles race. After I ran finals for 55mH, I was the last person that needed to throw the shot before we began finals. I had high energy and threw my PR. I scratched my next two regular throws. I ended up winning the event with my PR to this day of 37’11.75″. It was a great meet.

How does your coach motivate you?

My coaches are great motivators. They teach me how to push my limits. They are people that you want to make proud, which is the best motivation out there.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

If I could go anywhere in the world, I would travel through Europe. I would want to be somewhere that I can explore; meet new people and learn about different cultures.

What is your go-to pre-meet meal?

My go-to pre-meet meal varies, but it would probably be a mix of noodles, bread, and some sort of sugary sweet! I have a 24-hour sweet-tooth.

Do you have a favorite prerace song?

I have four songs that I listen to prerace: “Stronger” by Kanye West, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, “All I Do is Win” by DJ Khaled and “Remember the Name” by Fort Minor.

What motivates you most to do well?

My motivation to do well is from my heart. Honestly, I have always been competitive. But aside from wanting to be the best, I am motivated to do well by my parents and my coaches. I want them to be proud of me, and I want to be proud of myself.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

If I knew I could not fail, I would try almost anything. I would try to improve anything I could. But failing is a part of success. Failing teaches more than succeeding does, for the most part.

What is the best advice or quote ever given to you?

The best advice I have ever received is to not let other people tell you who you are or what you can’t do. It is up to you; be the best that you can be, and never give less than everything you have.

If you go to college, do you plan to compete in track and field? And where?

I am planning on either competing in track and field or playing softball in college. (not committed)

What is your favorite thing about Track and Field?

My favorite thing about this sport is that your get to compete for yourself, as well as your team. The team is so big that it becomes a family. Everyone is responsible for doing well individually to help their teammates win. We all have one another’s backs.

What is your favorite track facility?

My favorite track facility is probably the indoor dome at Dartmouth.
