After a 3 year wait, the New England Championships have returned! The 75th edition took place yesterday down at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, CT. For NH athletes making the trip, it was a great day as the Granite State bring home several New England titles including a new state and New England record!!!
In the most exciting race of the day, Hanover’s Pierce Seigne fresh off winning both the 1600 and 800 MOC titles, won the New England title with a diving finish breaking the NH State Record and New England record in the process. Seigne needed every inch to win in 4:07.09 to Ct’s Callum Sherry’s 4:07.13. Battling the entire last lap which they both covered in 58 or so seconds, both Seigne and Sherry leaned so much at the line, they both hit the track as the entire crowd cheered their effort! Truly what competition is 
about. Seigne broke BG’s Francis Hernandez’s 2010 record of 4:07.76
Also joining Seigne on the top of the podium was Concord’s Sam Hilts! Hilts made the decision to run the 3200 meters fresh, and that proved to a a good option, winning in a huge PR of 9:04.51. As has become his trademark and maybe not as dramatic as the mile race, Hilts measured the field perfectly running an intelligent race to enter the final lap with the lead and running strong to power home and win the title. Gilford’s Patrick Gandini also made the podium placing 6th in 9:16!
Coe-Brown’s Makena Lee was the other New England champion from New Hampshire as she won the pole vault! Last weekend in Sanborn she won the NH title setting a PR while clearing 11’0″. Well that as turned out to be just the precursor, as Lee, smiling the entire
competition, cleared 11’3″ and then 11’9″ to end her prep career as the pole vault New England Champion.
Portsmouth’s Nate Fletcher, perhaps 2022’s best all around NH track and field athlete, won the New England title in the 300m Hurdles. Fletcher also measured the field running his race to cross somewhat comfortably in the lead to win in 38.60 almost a full second faster than his performance last week. Nashua South’s Rory Olsen also made the podium placing 6th.
With competition so tough, making the podium at New Englands is also pretty special. In the girls 100, NH Champion, South’s Soraya Ross placed 4th on the lean in 12.44. She also came back to place just off the podium in the 200 in 7th clocking 25.59.
Portsmouth Christian’s Brianna Malone placed 3rd overall in the 800 setting a personal record in 2:11.52. Exeter’s Sydney Lavelle placed 4th in the 300m Hurdles in 45.33. Pinkerton’s Briana Danis and Coe-Brown’s Natalie Riley placed 4th and 5th in the Discus. Danis threw 121’01” while Riley had a mark of 119’3″. Merrimack’s Sam Epstein tied for 2nd in the Pole Vault clearing 14’3″. Also in the verticals, Hanover’s Ian Solberg placed 3rd in the High Jump. One of the best stories of the meet also had to be Pembroke’s Lillian Corbitt as she launched from 24th seed to 3rd place in the javelin! And NH saw their final action of the day with Portsmouth boys placing 5th in the 4×400 relay!
